Three Sunnybrook physicians honoured with University of Toronto Department of Medicine awards

June 19, 2020

Congratulations to Drs. Michelle Hladunewich, Liesly Lee and Harindra Wijeysundera, who were recognized with awards from the University of Toronto’s Department of Medicine as part of their 2020 Annual Day. The celebration is an opportunity to acknowledge faculty members and trainees who have generated and translated new knowledge, and demonstrated innovation in scholarship, research, teaching or clinical care.

Dr. Harindra Wijeysundera, interventional cardiologist, senior scientist, and director of research for the division of cardiology at Sunnybrook, was selected as the 2020 recipient of the William Goldie Prize in Research. The award is presented to a University of Toronto Department of Medicine member within 10 years of appointment who has contributed notable merit to the advancement of sound knowledge in internal medicine through research.

Both Dr. Michelle Hladunewich, physician-in-chief at Sunnybrook and Dr. Liesly Lee, consultant neurologist in the department of medicine at Sunnybrook, were inducted into the Academy of Master Clinicians. This prestigious recognition is given to clinicians who have demonstrated consistent outstanding clinical performance and the highest standard of patient care.

Dr. Lee was also a recipient of the Michael Gordon Award for Humanism in Medicine, which recognizes individuals who exemplify a deep and abiding commitment to humanism in health care. Humanism is understood to be an acknowledgment of other human beings as individuals with autonomy, unique backgrounds, values, and perspectives, and a commitment to address issues of inclusion, equity, and social justice.

Please join us in congratulating Drs. Hladunewich, Lee and Wijeysundera!
