Sunnybrook stroke researcher one of Ontario's "best and brightest"
Congratulations to Dr. David Gladstone, a neurologist at Sunnybrook and scientist at Sunnybrook Research Institute, who was awarded a prestigious Early Researcher Award (ERA) from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation.
Minister Glen Murray announced the awards on July 25 as part of a provincial investment in funding for innovative research. The goal of the ERA program is "to improve Ontario's ability to attract and retain the best and brightest research talent."
Every 10 minutes in Canada someone suffers a stroke. The most deadly and disabling kind is an intracerebral hemorrhage caused by a ruptured blood vessel, for which there are no proven treatments. Dr. Gladstone, who is also an assistant professor in the department of medicine at the University of Toronto, is leading a research team to revolutionize treatment for patients with this type of stroke.
Together with co-principal investigators Drs. Richard Aviv and Andrew Demchuk, the team is developing an innovative image-guided treatment protocol for patients with intracerebral hemorrhage and testing it in hospital emergency rooms as part of a CIHR-funded multicentre clinical trial. This work aims to improve survival rates and recovery for stroke victims, and help Ontario become an international leader in this field of medicine.
