Welcome Dr. Sonu Gaind!

Sunnybrook is pleased to welcome Dr. K. Sonu Gaind, as the new Chief, Department of Psychiatry, effective March 1, 2023.

Dr. Gaind completed his MD and postgraduate training in psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Dr. Gaind holds Certification in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He holds a Masters Certificate in Healthcare Management from Schulich School of Business. Dr. Gaind is currently a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. In 2021, Dr. Gaind was awarded Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. From 2017 to 2020, Dr. Gaind represented Canada as a Board member of the World Psychiatric Association. Since 2019, Dr Gaind has served on the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto as Teaching Staff Governor, representing medical teaching staff.

Dr. Gaind was previously Chief of Psychiatry and Medical Director of Mental Health at Humber River Hospital. Dr. Gaind has been actively involved in health policy development and advocacy and has been recognized with numerous regional, provincial, national and international awards for his teaching, advocacy and impact. At Humber Hospital, Dr. Gaind was instrumental in the move of their large mental health program from three facilities to the consolidated and modernized facility at Wilson. Dr. Gaind is a recognized leader with significant experience in building collaborative partnerships.

Dr. Gaind looks forward to leading the Department of Psychiatry and contributing to Sunnybrook becoming a world-class institution in mental health research and care.
