Sunnybrook to Launch a New Era in Trauma and Emergency Care

September 21, 2006

TORONTO, ON –Staff in the Emergency Department (ED) and Regional Trauma Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre are there for patients when it matters most, and next week many will share in the beginning of their department’s bright future.

On Friday, September 22nd, the hospital will celebrate the groundbreaking of construction on Sunnybrook’s ED and Regional Trauma Centre. Minister of Education and MPP Don Valley West, Kathleen Wynne and Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal, David Caplan, will also take part in the special event. It promises to be an opportunity to look at the improvements to come, and also reflect on the amazing work that the ED and Trauma teams do everyday.

The ED, which was originally designed for 20,000 visits every year, currently treats more than double the amount of patients, who are among the most acutely ill in Ontario. This includes more than 1,200 trauma and burn patients who need immediate and life-saving care. The renovations will double the size of the existing ED, increasing the capacity to respond to current and future demands.
