Tips for limiting social media use

Scrolling through social media may be a daily habit that has grown during the pandemic.

Dr. Carolyn Boulos, Sunnybrook youth psychiatrist, discussed the impact of increased social media in a recent Global News story. A rise in online activity and information overload has the potential of heightening stress, anxiety, and depression for young people,and could lead to feelings of disconnect.

"Kids are really missing out on the contact that happens when you are face to face with people,” Dr. Boulos explains to Global News.

To help decrease time spent on social media use, she recommends taking gradual steps, such as avoiding devices in the bedroom or during mealtimes to be in the present moment with the people around you.

Dr. Boulos also recommends offers these tips for taking a break from social media and managing information overload:

  • Limit time on your social media newsfeed to help ease anxiety.
  • Turn off notifications on your phone.
  • Pick up a non-computer-based hobby.

Simple strategies that can help limit online activity, screen time, and potentially ease feelings of stress.
