Measles update

March 16, 2015

As you may have heard, there have been significant outbreaks of measles in North America in the past few months. The current recommendations for immunization issued by Toronto Public Health for people who have not been exposed to measles are:

  • People born 1970 and later should receive 2 doses of the vaccine MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) in total, at least 28 days apart. Most adults in this category did receive one dose as a child. If you do not have a record of your childhood immunizations, it is fine to get 1 dose as a booster (available by booking an appointment with your primary care nurse).
  • People born before 1970 are considered immune as measles was circulating in Canada before 1970; however, some people may be susceptible. Travellers born before 1970 should consider having one dose of MMR.
  • Infants and children traveling to areas where measles is circulating (including North America) can be given MMR earlier than usual
    • Infants can be given MMR at 6-12 months (but will still need 2 doses after the age of 1 year)
    • Preschoolers can be given second MMR earlier than 4-6 years
    • Should ideally be given at least 2 weeks prior to travel

MMR is a live vaccine, so should not be given to pregnant or immunocompromised individuals.

If you think you may have been exposed to the measles, please call the office and ask to speak with your primary care nurse.
