Communication: What providers can do better

March 19, 2014

By Linda Fox

One of the conundrums of medicine is how a patient can get his or her message across to the health care providers on their team.

In a recent meeting of the North East Toronto Health Link Patient Advisory Council, patient members came up with some thoughts on the difficulties they face.

One member noted that they would like their test results transferred to all the health care providers they see, so that everyone has the same information. Concern about having to redo tests was expressed if one doctor was out of the loop.

But the most important thing is that communication between providers and patients must be consistent and shared openly.

Another patient member noted there is also an issue with how physicians and specialists are "revered." This leads to an unequal power balance between patients and providers. It is important to educate physicians in medical school on the realities of the patient experience and their journey in the healthcare system, another patient member said.

It was suggested all hospitals (some already do) initiate a white board system in patient rooms and wards. This would be used to detail information on the patient starting with the name of the nurse on duty, the handling physician's name, medication types and times. This would help the patient and the family members know who their questions should be directed to and provide a record of what meds their loved one has been given and when.
