Sunnybrook physician and scientist appointed to the Order of Ontario

November 9, 2023

Dr. Beverley Orser, a physician and scientist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, has been appointed to the Order of Ontario 2022 – the province’s highest civilian honour. It recognizes exceptional leaders from all walks of life and diverse fields of endeavour whose impact and lasting legacy have played an important role in building a stronger province, country and world.

Dr. Orser has been recognized for her ground-breaking work focused on optimizing anesthesia, improving access to safe care in rural communities and mitigating post-operative delirium and cognitive decline. The appointment also recognizes her role as a global leader in medication safety, by serving with the International Anesthesia Research Society and other international organizations, and dedicating her life to pioneering research and advancing understanding of how anesthetic drugs alter brain function.

“I am humbled by this incredible honour. Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has been my academic home for over 30 years. I deeply appreciate the support my research and patient safety work has received over the years. I thank all of my outstanding colleagues, particularly the members of the Department of Anesthesia and the operating room team for their unwavering support. It is a privilege to work at this world-class clinical and research institute – we have a great deal of exciting work ahead!” says Dr. Orser.

26 new appointees were announced by Lt.-Gov Elizabeth Dowdeswell, which also include former hockey champion Eric Lindros for supporting medical research and sports for children with disabilities, as well as Elizabeth Witmer, the first female MPP elected in the Region of Waterloo, among others.
