Sunnybrook has been selected from an extensive list of entrants, to be recognized as one of Greater Toronto's Top 75 employers for 2009. This is an annual competition organized by Mediacorp, the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers. The special designation recognizes the Greater Toronto employers that are leading their industries in offering exceptional places to work. A new service at Sunnyrook is striving to ensure that pregnant women have the option to detect possible fetal problems earlier in their pregnancy. The Toronto Centre for Early Fetal Ultrasound at the Perinatal and Gynaecology Department of Sunnybrook is the first of its kind in Canada performing early stage fetal targeted ultrasound examination in order to detect potential fetal conditions. Dr. Ori Nevo, a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist is a lead physician at the Centre. Dr. Mark Rappoport is the lead investigator of a study that has found that older drivers with dementia who are prescribed psychotropic medication and/or exhibit psychiatric symptoms should be evaluated for road safety.

Sunnybrook researchers are the first worldwide to show a new form of MRI technique may prove to be a useful screening tool to prevent stroke and heart attach by detecting a specific type of dangerous plaque in the arteries of high risk patients. The results of the study, led by lead investigator Dr. Alan Moody, were published in the October 2008 issue of Radiology. Sunnybrook researcher Dr. Donald Redelmeier and Stanford University statistician Robert Tibshirani have found an increased risk of fatal motor vehicle crashes on US presidential election days. The results of the study were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Sunnybrook hosted a successful talk on Anxiety and Depression, as one in five Canadians is currently experiencing a mental illness - depression and anxiety disorders are the most common and prevalent conditions faced. Sunnybrook's Foundation announced the inaugural recipients of the Sunnybrook Rose Award, George Fierheller and Dr. Marvin Tile inspired by long-standing donors and dedicated volunteers Alexandre and Jeanine Raab.
