Veterans research at Sunnybrook Research Institute

Sunnybrook has the largest veterans' care facility in Canada. In partnership with Veterans Affairs Canada, the hospital offers long-term and complex care, including palliative care for patients facing advanced disease at the end of life, to over 300 veterans from the Second World War and Korean War. The hospital also provides care for people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias in the Dorothy Macham Home, a residential-style home with 10 beds that offers a specially designed therapeutic environment and is the first facility of its kind in Canada.

The establishment of the veterans research program at Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) is the culmination of consultation with key stakeholders and analysis as to how to serve the community better. It embraces many programs and services at Sunnybrook, including primary and community medicine, dentistry, dermatology, gastroenterology, general internal medicine, endocrinology, geriatric medicine, infectious diseases, nephrology, rehabilitation, respirology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology and general surgery.

The activity of the veterans research program will contribute to an informed community, healthier lifestyles, better elder care and improved navigation through the system for patients. Evidence-based research, knowledge transfer, and the creation of algorithms, guidelines and protocols are fundamental to achieving these goals. Results will enhance the continuum of care and lead to new models of care and knowledge.
