Research Summary:

The focus of Dr Guttmann’s research is health system performance and policy evaluation related to the care of children and youth, in particular those with higher health care needs.

Dr Guttmann’s earlier research focused on quality of care measurements for children within discrete parts of the health care system, such as emergency departments. Her research used variation in clinical tool use and policy instruments, such as pay-for-performance, to examine health system factors associated with improved outcomes.

More recently Dr Guttmann’s research has focused on elucidating care and outcomes of children and youth around transition points across the health care system, such as during the transition to adult care and around integration with other services like mental health services. Her research uses routinely collected health and administrative data, and her work has validated the use of these data for research. She has been a member of the international steering group that led the development of reporting guidelines for research using health and administrative data.

Dr Guttmann’s current work includes ongoing mixed-methods approaches to examine the role of primary care in supporting transitions from youth to adult care, a pragmatic randomized controlled trial of care coordination for medically complex children, and an evaluation of a system-wide government strategy focused on improving mental health outcomes for children and youth.
