Orthopaedic Trauma

Orthopaedic trauma involves injuries to the bones and joints of:

  • the pelvis
  • upper extremities (hands and arms/shoulder), and
  • lower extremities (feet and legs)

Most of our patients sustain these injuries from high-energy events such as motor-vehicle collisions or falls from significant heights.

Many patients have multiple system injuries that are treated together.

Ontario patients with complex injuries, particularly fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum (hip socket), often need transfer to Sunnybrook for specialized management of their challenging injuries.

Our specialists also see patients who have problems with bone healing or other fracture problems that require specialized expertise after previous treatment.

Many of our patients are initially seen in the trauma room upon emergency arrival. We also see patients who have been referred from the Sunnybrook emergency department or family practices with isolated fractures.

Our team

Our Orthopaedic Trauma team was established in 1976 and was the first unit of its kind in Canada.

As a part of the Holland Bone and Joint Program at Sunnybrook, we continue to provide clinical and academic leadership in Canada in our discipline and we are also part of a multi-disciplinary team within the Tory Trauma Program at Sunnybrook.
