Schatzker Joint Preservation Initiative for Active Adults
Joint preservation
Many people experience knee pain that prevents them from participating in activities they enjoy. There are many causes for knee pain, but the most common are arthritic and pre-arthritic conditions.
While total knee replacement is a successful treatment for advanced arthritis, many more Canadians have only mild to moderate arthritis and may benefit from other treatments.
“For these people, “joint preservation” is the goal – improvements in pain and function are possible through non-surgical treatments, and specialized surgeries that optimize knee function and bone alignment.

Patient story
“Within three to four weeks, I wasn’t feeling pain in my hips and I wasn’t taking any anti-inflammatory medications,” says Albert Pinto, who underwent osteotomy surgery at Sunnybrook. “My knees feel like they’re back to 100 per cent and life is starting to feel like it’s returning to normal!”
