Schatzker Joint Preservation Initiative for Active Adults

About us and our care

The Schatzker Joint Preservation Initiative for Active Adults is unique in Canada. Patients referred to the program receive a comprehensive evaluation in the Rapid Assessment Centre.

Advanced practice providers (physiotherapists or occupational therapists) will perform an initial assessment, provide treatment recommendations and triage patients to one of our joint preservation surgeons. Meet our team »

Joint preservation

Many people experience knee pain that prevents them from participating in activities they enjoy. There are many causes for knee pain, but the most common are arthritic and pre-arthritic conditions.

While total knee replacement is a successful treatment for advanced arthritis, many more Canadians have only mild to moderate arthritis and may benefit from other treatments.

In these people, “joint preservation” is the goal – improvements in pain and function are possible through specialized surgeries that optimize knee function and bone alignment. A person treated with joint preservation strategies can expect fewer restrictions and a more “natural” feeling knee compared with total joint replacement – which can often be delayed or avoided altogether.

Joint preservation procedures

A wide spectrum of joint preservation procedures are available including arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction, articular cartilage restoration, bone realignment procedures and partial joint replacement.

Patient story

“Within three to four weeks, I wasn’t feeling pain in my hips and I wasn’t taking any anti-inflammatory medications,” says Albert Pinto, who underwent osteotomy surgery at Sunnybrook. “My knees feel like they’re back to 100 per cent and life is starting to feel like it’s returning to normal!”
