About radiation

Radiation treatment uses powerful radiation beams to kill cancers cells and shrink tumours.

Our radiation treatment program provides consultation, planning and delivery of radiation treatment for a wide variety of cancers.

We are a highly specialized referral centre for:

  • Image-guided intensity modulated radiation treatment: This type of radiation is delivered under CT guidance and allows for precise delivery of radiation doses to the cancer and sparing of normal organs and tissues.
  • Brachytherapy: Tiny seeds are placed in or near the tumour to deliver radiation directly to the cancer cells. Our centre has specific expertise in image-guided brachytherapy for prostate, gynecological and breast cancer. In our new MRI-Brachytherapy suite, we can now guide internal radiation treatment with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). As a result, we are able to target tumours with unprecedented precision.
  • Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SBRT or SABR): This type of treatment allows for large doses of radiation delivered under image guidance to tumours within or located anywhere in the body with only 1-5 treatments. We are one of the largest SBRT delivery centres in Canada. We offer SBRT for multiple cancer sites including lung, prostate, and spine.
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery: This type of treatment allows for large doses of radiation delivered under image guidance to tumours within or located near the brain and spinal cord.
  • Multi-modality and concurrent treatment: At Sunnybrook, radiation therapy is integrated in a treatment program, including surgery and chemotherapy in a multi-disciplinary model of care.

We also offer clinical research fellowships in numerous areas of specialty.
