Pedorthics and foot orthotics

Pedorthic services at Sunnybrook Centre for Independent Living (SCIL) specializes in non-surgical treatment for foot and lower limb pain. Our goal is to provide quality care to improve foot comfort.

We provide assessment, education and treatment for a wide variety of foot conditions including:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Bunion pain
  • Hammer/claw toes
  • Ankle pain
  • Flat feet
  • High arches
  • Diabetes, arthritis, polio and other medical conditions

We provide:

  • Custom foot orthotics & off-the-shelf foot orthotics
  • Custom orthopaedic footwear
  • Footwear modifications
  • Orthopaedic & retail footwear

For those with complex conditions related to the foot, we provide team-based assessment in our clinic with a physiatrist (a doctor specializing in rehabilitation medicine) and certified pedorthist to assess your foot mechanics, how you walk and your footwear. They will make treatment recommendations for you based on your current abilities and needs.

We provide onsite manufacturing of custom orthopaedic footwear, custom foot orthotics and footwear modifications.

We have experience in fitting the "hard-to-fit" foot, especially those who require wide widths. Our custom-made foot orthotics, orthopaedic footwear and custom modifications to off-the-shelf shoes are manufactured on site in our SCIL Laboratory by certified pedorthic technicians and certified pedorthists.

A certified pedorthist uses non-surgical methods to ease pain, abnormalities and debilitating conditions of the lower limbs and feet. They are trained to assess lower limb anatomy and biomechanics for clinical practice, custom footwear and orthotic modifications, design and fitting.

Please note: foot orthotics, custom footwear, footwear modifications and orthopaedic footwear are not funded by OHIP, however some third-party insurance plans may cover these costs. There is no charge for an assessment.
