Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is based on similar concepts to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy but also integrates aspects of mindfulness. It is used to help patients with difficulties regulating their emotions as well as those with struggles around suicidal ideation or self-harm. DBT can also help patients improve their relationships and manage distress better.

DBT skills

Mindfulness

To be aware and focus on the present by accepting your feelings and thoughts without judgement.

Distress Tolerance

To help individuals develop coping techniques and resilience which may be helpful in the prevention of self-destructive tendencies. For example, weighing the pros and cons in conflicts and challenges.

Interpersonal Effectiveness

To teach patients with depression how to build self-respect and improve relationships.

Emotion Regulation

To help patients recognize their emotions and regulate their feelings.
