Becoming a volunteer

Sunnybrook volunteers make a difference… when it matters most!

Volunteers are a valued part of the hospital community. A wide variety of individuals share their time to provide caring and compassionate service to help improve the patient and family experience. Our goal is a mutually beneficial placement where volunteers will also have a rewarding experience.

We are excited to have volunteers back at Sunnybrook after a lengthy pause due to the pandemic! The health and safety of our patients, visitors, volunteers and staff continues to be our priority.

  • Opportunities to volunteer are limited to specific roles.
  • We are currently accepting applications from high school students (minimum 16 years old) for a limited number of placements.
  • Opportunities for post-secondary students are also very limited.

Considerations and prerequisites

  • Before you apply, please carefully review the requirements for volunteering at Sunnybrook.
  • Individuals who wish to volunteer at Sunnybrook must be fully-vaccinated for COVID-19; minimum 2 doses – Canadian-approved vaccine (some areas require 3 doses)
  • As part of your application, be prepared to provide the names and accurate contact information for two references. Family members or friends are not acceptable references.
  • Volunteers must be comfortable using devices and technology as our application, screening and training process is online/virtual.

Before you apply, please consider if you are able to meet the following requirements:

  • Are you prepared to make a reliable commitment of one 3-4 hour shift per week, for a minimum of 6 months to 1 year?
  • Are you fully-vaccinated for COVID-19?
  • Do you meet the minimum age requirement of 16 years and older? (Note: at this time we currently do not have opportunities for high school students.)

If you are accepted, please be prepared to:

  • Submit documentation of your COVID-19 vaccines.
  • Complete a medical form, including a 2-step TB skin test with your family physician, and provide immunization status.
  • Have the seasonal flu vaccine.
  • Comply with all Infection Prevention & Control policies, including wearing required personal protective equipment e.g. mask.
  • Participate in virtual orientation and on-site training before you start and ongoing as needed.
  • Complete a vulnerable sector police check for some roles.

Ready to apply?

Completing the online application will take approximately 10 minutes. Chrome or Edge internet browsers are recommended.

Prior to beginning, please be prepared to:

  • Indicate the days/times you are available.
  • Provide accurate contact information for two references – these may not be family members or friends.
  • Due to the high volume of applicants, we are unable to respond to all individual inquires. You will only be contacted if you are being considered for an available role; however, this also does not guarantee a placement.
