Volunteers

Becoming a volunteer

Sunnybrook volunteers make a difference … when it matters most!

We are currently accepting applications for volunteer opportunities in a variety of areas including the Veterans Centre, Odette Cancer Centre, Holland Centre, and St. John's Rehab.

Please review our requirements, volunteer opportunities, and application process before submitting your online application.

Start your application here:

Before you apply:

  • Do you meet the minimum age requirement of 16 years and older?
  • Are you prepared to make a reliable commitment of one 3-4 hour shift per week, for a minimum of 6 months to 1 year?
  • Please note: a volunteer is an individual who enters into an agreement to provide services (unpaid) in an approved volunteer role that meets the needs of the hospital. Volunteers perform tasks at the direction of, and on behalf of the hospital. Only those who work in an approved role shall be given status as a registered volunteer.
    • Individuals will not be given volunteer status because they wish to gain experience through observation or are willing to assist a department without compensation.
    • Volunteer roles and activities are identified as a priority to enhance and improve the patient experience. These roles and activities have been reviewed, approved and deemed appropriate by hospital administration.

  • Provide refundable deposit of $20.00 for uniform & photo ID and $10 for parking pass (if needed).

Ready to apply?

Completing the online application will take approximately 10 minutes. Prior to beginning, please be prepared to:

  • Identify your preferred location to volunteer.
  • Ask yourself — Where Can I Volunteer?
  • Indicate the days/times you are available.
  • Provide reference contact information — name, email and telephone number — for two (2) references.
  • Ensure your references are aware that the reference link is only valid for 2 weeks.
  • Ensure your references are aware that Sunnybrook Volunteer Resources will be in contact within 24-48 hours of submitting your application.

Next steps

  • Your references will be contacted and asked to complete our online reference form.
  • Once both references are completed, your application will be reviewed.
  • Please ensure your references are aware that the reference link is only valid for 2 weeks.
  • Only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Volunteers are selected and placed in roles based on the needs of the hospital, interests, skills, availability and suitability. Due to the number of applications we receive, not all applicants will be contacted. Applications will be held on file for maximum of 6 months.
