Becoming a volunteer

Sunnybrook volunteers make a difference!

Volunteers are a valued part of the hospital community. They share their time to support a positive patient and family experience. Our goal is a mutually beneficial placement where volunteers will also have a rewarding experience.

Considerations and prerequisites

  • As part of your application, please be prepared to provide the names and accurate contact information for two references. Family members and friends are not acceptable references.
  • Before you apply, please carefully review the requirements for volunteering at Sunnybrook.
  • Seasonal flu vaccine is strongly encouraged and may be required for some roles/areas.

    Start your application here:

Before you apply, please consider if you are able to meet the following requirements:

    • Are you prepared to make a reliable commitmentof one 3-4 hour shift per week, for a minimum of 6-12 months?
    • Do you meet the minimum age requirement of 16?

If you are accepted, please be prepared to:

    • Complete a medical form with your family doctor, which includes a 2-step tuberculosis (TB) skin test and your immunization status.
    • Comply with all Sunnybrook infection prevention and control policies, including wearing required personal protective equipment (ie. masks).
    • Participate in virtual and on-site orientation and training.
    • Complete a vulnerable sector police check for some roles. Please note that the cost of this is the responsibility of each volunteer applicant.

    Go to the next step

    Ready to apply?

Completing the online application will take approximately 10 minutes. Chrome or Edge internet browsers are recommended.

Prior to beginning, please be prepared to:

    • Indicate the days/times you are available.
    • Provide contact information for two references. These should not be family members and/or friends.

We look forward to receiving your volunteer application. Due to the high volume of applications, we can’t guarantee a placement for everyone, however, we do our best to match volunteers with opportunities that align with their interests and availability.

    Important notices for...

    Internationally educated professionals

If you are an internationally educated healthcare professional, please note that while volunteering does not provide the opportunity to practice or gain experience within your specific profession, it can provide general experience within Canadian healthcare. Volunteer roles do not include duties or responsibilities that are performed by a licensed or regulated profession (i.e., physiotherapist, nurse, lab technician, etc.)

    Others trained in health-care fields

We do not offer specific volunteer roles that provide the opportunity to practice skills of personal support workers and medical office assistants.

    Those seeking employment at Sunnybrook

Volunteers are welcome to apply to employment opportunities, however, volunteering does not guarantee employment, and individuals may not hold status as both a volunteer and employee at the same time.
