Calling all moms and dads

July 16, 2010

Being a parent to a newborn baby creates challenges for any family, but this major life change can be even more stressful when that newborn requires intensive care. For that reason, we've created a unique employment opportunity.

This new and innovative position is a prime example of how the new Women & Babies facility has been designed as the most family-friendly birthing centre in the country. This role has been developed in collaboration with the Family Advisory Committee.

This special mom or dad will be the parent of a graduate from the NICU at Sunnybrook. He or she will act as a liaison between staff and parents and will use his or her own experience to help parents become active members of the health-care team.

"Parents who have had a child in the NICU understand the challenges, and what parents need," says Marion Deland, patient care manager at Sunnybrook's NICU.

"In addition to the tremendous care provided by Sunnybrook's health-care team, we hope hiring a mom or dad will help new parents feel even more comfortable in their journey," Deland adds.

The NICU at Sunnybrook will have the capacity for 41 babies and will provide around-the-clock care for a projected 1,200 babies a year.

The new home for the Women & Babies Program, opening on Sunday, September 12th, will encompass 120,000 square feet over two new floors at the Bayview campus.

Designed with input from women and their families, as well as their care providers, the new facility is peaceful, warm, and family friendly. These new facilities will provide a state-of-the-art environment for Sunnybrook's world-class Women & Babies team.
