Golfers Giving Back: In Support of Cancer Research

Golf tournaments and golfers often share a deep connection to philanthropy, channeling their passion for the game into efforts that support charitable causes and make a meaningful impact on communities. The Ben Kern National Pro-Am, held annually at The National Golf Club of Canada for several years, is a prestigious tournament that honors Canadian golf legend Ben Kern. Over the past two years, the event has supported cancer research, with Sunnybrook being one of the two beneficiaries alongside another organization.

Thanks to the generous support of the National Golf Club of Canada’s members, last year the Ben Kern National Pro-Am raised over $160,000, in support of prostate cancer research at Sunnybrook. “We have a great community who is willing to step up,” says Joseph Murphy, National Golf Club of Canada’s GM, “and philanthropy is at the heart of our community.” The funds raised will directly contribute to advancing research and treatment options, offering hope to those affected by prostate cancer.

The decision to support prostate cancer research reflects the tournament’s commitment to social responsibility and health and wellbeing. “Prostate cancer touches so many of our members, and we really want to give back to the community,” says Stephen Miller, Chair of the Board at The National Golf Club of Canada. By aligning with health innovation, organizers demonstrate their commitment and support of Sunnybrook’s capacity as a leader in healthcare and research.

As the Ben Kern National Pro-Am evolves, organizers are continuing to focus on creating an incredible experience for golfers, along with raising more funds in support of cancer research. Sunnybrook appreciates the remarkable generosity of tournament participants, whose support is crucial to advancing research and innovation. It is through such contributions that donors truly are at the heart of Sunnybrook, and help us strengthen and grow our community.

The tournament’s impact extends beyond healthcare to nurture the next generation of golfers. A portion of the proceeds will continue to support junior golf programs, echoing Ben Kern’s commitment to fostering talent and passion among young athletes. This dual focus on health and sport underscores the tournament’s holistic approach to community engagement.

Ultimately, the Ben Kern National Pro-Am at The National Golf Club of Canada stands as a shining example of how sports can unite for a common cause. It honors a legacy, supports critical research, and inspires a new generation of golfers to aim for excellence both on and off the fairways.
