Coronary artery disease (CAD)

Definition

A condition whereby coronary arteries narrow sufficiently to prevent adequate blood flow to the heart muscle. Usually begins when hard cholesterol substances (plaques) are deposited within a coronary artery, and progress to the point where the heart is damaged due to lack of blood supply.

Also called coronary disease or coronary heart disease.
