Progenitor cell

Definition

An immature cell in the marrow that can be isolated by growing suspensions of marrow cells in culture dishes with added growth factors.

Endothelial proginator cells can enter the bloodstream and go to areas of blood vessel injury to help repair the damage. The number of endothelial progenitor cells in the blood is a risk factor for vascular disease; depletion of endothelial progenitor cells may contribute to blood vessel disease.
