2024 Greenest Employers

April 16, 2024

Thanks to the hard work of our staff and a significant number of innovative green programs, Sunnybrook was announced today as one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2024 by Mediacorp Canada Inc. This marks the 16th consecutive year of recognition for Sunnybrook.

“Tackling climate change is the most urgent issue facing us as a species, and Sunnybrook – as a leading organization and employer – could have a significant impact both through our work at the Hospital and by engaging its employees”, says Michael Lithgow, co-chair of Sunnybrook’s Green Task Force. “Receiving this Greenest Employer honour for the 16th time really speaks to the organization’s commitment to creating a more environmentally sustainable hospital environment.”

This national competition is organized by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers. The designation recognizes employers that are leaders in integrating environmental principles into their corporate culture and have developed environmentally friendly programs that are recognized not only within the facility but also throughout the community.

Sunnybrook was recognized for its dedication to green initiatives, for example:

  • In its 1st year of existence, Sunnybrook’s Green Task Force appointed three sustainability leaders to co-chair the group and has recruited 15 additional volunteers from across the organization.
  • Sunnybrook was proud to host the national charity, Trees for Life, to kick-off their Trees for Health campaign. The campaign is dedicated to planting trees in tribute to healthcare workers and their bravery throughout the pandemic.
  • Cogeneration, or combined heat and power (CHP), is the on-site simultaneous production of electricity and useful heat. The CHP at Sunnybrook has provided multiple benefits over its first two years of operations including reducing loads on the electricity grid by 85% and reducing net utility costs for Sunnybrook by $2.5 million annually.
