Holland Centre helps patients hit home runs

October 25, 2013

The team at the Holland Centre has been working hard to help patients who undergo primary hip or knee replacement get home as quickly as possible to continue their recovery.

To accomplish the new "Home on Day 3 is Key" initiative, consistent messaging by all team members both before and after surgery is helping patients and their families feel better prepared and ready for discharge after three days. Each day counts and early mobilization, including having meals out of bed, is another significant focus.

Following a baseball theme, the Home in 3 initiative sees patients head to first base once surgery is complete, second base later on Day 1, third base on Day 2 and home plate on Day 3.

Patients recover well when they get back to their own home and their own routines, said Deborah Kennedy, Manager of Rehabilitation and Program Development.

The "teaming up" of patients and staff has already resulted in a significant increase in patients being able to go home on Day 3. In June 2013, 50 percent of patients undergoing hip replacements were discharged by Day 3, compared to 26 percent in May. A similar increase has been seen in our patients who have had their knees replaced.
