Nursing professorship to focus on research
“We are pleased to announce that Dr. Louise Rose, a prominent critical care researcher and nurse, has been appointed the inaugural holder of the TD Nursing Professorship in Critical Care Research at Sunnybrook,” says Ru Taggar, Vice President Quality and Patient Safety and Chief Nursing and Health Professions Executive. “This new research role is the first of its kind in nursing at Sunnybrook, and Dr. Rose brings to it a wealth of experience.”
Dr. Rose’s research interests are in critical care and emergency specialties with a focus on improving outcomes of mechanically ventilated patients through a variety of mechanisms including symptom management in the critically ill.
“Dr. Rose will spend 80 per cent of her time undertaking clinical research and performing nursing research capacity building initiatives here in ‘critical care central’ at Sunnybrook,” says Dr. Brian Cuthbertson, chief of the Department of Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Rose’s primary area of teaching interest is in acute care with particular interest in critical care and high dependency nursing. Within this specialty focus, she teaches advanced physiology and pathophysiology concepts as well as the application of relevant technology and multi-disciplinary interventions.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to be at the very hub of critical care and emergency services and teaching and to be in a position to further critical care research from an interprofessional perspective,” Dr. Rose says.
Dr. Rose began her five-year term as the inaugural holder of the TD Professorship in Critical Care Nursing Research on June 2, 2014. A recognized leader in critical care, Sunnybrook has been referred to as Ontario’s ‘critical care central’, with the highest concentration of critical care resources in the province.

Dr. Rose is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto’s Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing and was awarded the inaugural appointment of the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Limited-Tenure Professorship in Critical Care in 2008. She holds a CIHR New Investigator Award and appointments as Director of Research at the Provincial Centre of Weaning Excellence at Toronto East General Hospital, and as adjunct scientist at the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences, the Li Ka Shing Institute at St. Michael’s Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital and West Park Healthcare Centre.
Dr. Rose has published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles and has made over 80 presentations at national and international scientific forums. She holds a PhD and a Master’s of Nursing from the University of Melbourne, Australia.
