Sunnybrook Research Institute ranked as one of Canada's top 10 research hospitals

Sunnybrook Research Institute was ranked in the top 10 on the 2020 list of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals, released by RE$EARCH Infosource Inc. The list analyzes hospital-based research institutes on several metrics, including total funding.

SRI research spending totaled more than $102 million in the 2019 fiscal year, an increase of 10.2% from the previous year. For researcher intensity, used to measure income per scientist, SRI ranked 10th in the country with an average of $306,700 in expenditure per researcher. Under institution intensity, defined as research activity as a percentage of total hospital activity, SRI ranked fifth with 9.5% intensity.

The top 40 list scores hospitals across the country based on total research income in the previous fiscal year, as reported in the Canadian Research Hospitals Database. Funds that are considered include grants, contributions and contracts from government and non-government sources in the previous fiscal year.
