Team looks to improve gastric cancer care across Canada

June 14, 2018

Patient outcomes after gastric cancer surgery vary between treating hospitals and across countries.

Since the surgery is rare, smaller centres tend to see only a few a year, leading to a discrepancy in the care available at large centres versus smaller cancer programs, and the creation of guidelines to improve care.

To further improve care across Canada, Dr. Natalie Coburn and a team of physicians is leading a symposium in gastric cancer care and the first surgical skills lab in North America, where cancer surgeons can hone their skills in this area.

“Currently, the standards vary by location,” Dr. Coburn said. “We want to help surgeons across Canada create a uniform standard of care for these patients, improving outcomes for this rare disease.”

The course will take place June 14 and 15 in Toronto. Find out more
