Dr. Barry McLellan appointed new chair of CAHO

The Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario (CAHO) is pleased to announce that Dr. Barry McLellan, President and CEO of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, has been appointed as the Chair of CAHO Council. Dr. McLellan provides leadership for one of Canada's largest academic health sciences centres which conducts more than $100 million in research, provides educational opportunities for 2,000 students and cares for one million patients.

"We are delighted to welcome Dr. McLellan as the Chair of CAHO," said Karen Michell, Executive Director of CAHO. "Dr. McLellan's extensive experience leading one of Canada's leading research hospitals and his knowledge of the challenges and opportunities facing Ontario's health care system will serve our organization well and help ensure CAHO remains a collaborative partner in building a robust health research enterprise for Ontario."

Prior to his position as President and CEO at Sunnybrook, Dr. McLellan was the Chief Coroner for Ontario. Dr. McLellan is also a Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He has published more than 60 scientific papers, written a textbook on trauma care and lectured extensively, including international presentations in the fields of trauma care and forensic investigation.

A graduate of the University of Toronto with a Medical Doctorate in 1981, Dr. McLellan subsequently trained in emergency medicine, receiving a Fellowship in 1985 (Specialist in Emergency Medicine). Dr. McLellan was the Director of the Trauma Program and Vice President of Specialty Services at Sunnybrook. He was also the Director of the hospital's Emergency Department, Base Hospital Program (paramedic program) and Trauma Research.

"I am honoured to serve as the Chair of CAHO," said Dr. McLellan. "CAHO members have a rich history of leading health care transformation through evidence-based research. I look forward to working with my colleagues and building on the work our Council has done to help build a strong research hospital sector in Ontario."

Dr. McLellan appointment was announced at the recent CAHO Annual General Meeting in Toronto. In addition to Dr. McLellan's appointment as Chair, CAHO also welcomes Leslee Thompson, President and CEO for Kingston General Hospital as Vice Chair and Dr. Jack Kitts, President and CEO for The Ottawa Hospital as Secretary/Treasurer to the CAHO Council. Mary Jo Haddad, President and CEO of the Hospital for Sick Children, will serve as Past-Chair.
