Thyroid Test Updates - January 22, 2015

Due to a change in instrumentation, our upper reference limits (normal cut-offs for positivity) will change on Feb 19, 2015, as follows.

  1. Anti-thyroglobulin antibody (ATG): < 116 kU/L
  2. Anti-thyroid-specific peroxidase antibody (ATPO): < 35 kU/L
  3. High-sensitivity Thyroglobulin (hs-Tg): < 60 micrograms/L (< 60 μg/L)

Urinary Citric Acid no longer performed on site - July 28, 2014

Effective Monday, August 4th, all 24 hour urine Citric Acid requests will be referred out for testing via Hospitals In-Common Laboratory Inc.
• There are no changes to specimen requirements or Reference Range.
• Turn-around-time: 10 days
Please note that random urine testing is no longer available.

Discontinuation of CK-MB testing - April 15, 2014

The 2012 Third Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction identifies troponin as the preferred biomarker for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction, including MI post-CABG, post-stenting etc. CK-MB is the alternative only if troponin is not available. Troponin has been available at Sunnybrook for over a decade. We will therefore stop CK-MB testing on April 24, 2014.

Free Triiodothyronine (Free T3) Reference Interval Update - March 28, 2014

Due to a recent change in reagent formulation, the reference interval for free triiodothyronine (free T3) will be revised as follows, effective April 3, 2014: Free T3 (adult): 3.1 - 6.8 pmol/L

The above reference interval represents the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles of over 5 thousand healthy adults, and has been verified with 20 local volunteers.
