ALERT: Discontinuation of Serum Folate and RBC Folate at SHSC - April 12, 2013

EFFECTIVE April 18, 2013
Clinically significant folate deficiency has all but disappeared and biochemical deficiency is rare. In the last 12 months at Sunnybrook, only one serum folate fell into the deficiency range, out of 523 samples tested. For 3722 RBC folate samples, none were clinically deficient, and less than 1% (22 samples out of 3722) were in the indeterminate range (550 to 893 nmol/L).
