Education

The Department of Critical Care Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has a strong commitment to medical education. Physician trainees (residents and fellows) pursuing specialty or subspecialty education, as well as medical students from University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine, participate in clinical activities and the daily critical care education program. Department members strive to teach the foundations of intensive care in addition to practical clinical skills to these students and postgraduate trainees.

Structured Teaching Program

Quality of Care Meeting (0730-0830 on weekdays)

The purpose of Morning Report is to discuss specific cases and associated clinical issues. In the usual format, one resident presents a synopsis of cases admitted by the previous night's on-call team. The entire group then discusses diagnostic possibilities, appropriate investigations and management strategies, facilitated by the attending physicians.

Bedside Teaching (1000-1230 on weekdays)

Bedside Teaching  is an integral part of interdisciplinary rounds. During these rounds, residents and fellows present cases and develop a management plan for the day, with input from all allied health care professionals caring for the patient.

ICU Resident Seminar Series (1300-1400 on weekdays)

During the didactic seminar series, trainees are exposed to a wide spectrum of intensive care topics over the two to three month period of their rotation. The Education Steering Committee organizes these seminars.

Critical Care Grand Rounds (1500-1600 on Wednesdays, September to June)

Local and international speakers provide dynamic presentations on topics relevant to critical care.

Journal Club (1500-1600 on Fridays)

A fellow presents a recent article of interest, selected with input from faculty mentors. The discussion centers on the clinical topic studied, in addition to methodological issues and interpretation.
