Posting Closed: Canada Research Chair – Tier 1 and Tier 2 Chairs in the Physical Sciences Platform

The Physical Sciences Platform at Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) invites applications to be nominated for one of two Canada Research Chair (CRC) vacancies. One vacancy is for a Tier 1 Chair; the second is for a Tier 2 Chair.

Tier 1 Chair: Applicants must be full-time Senior Scientists in the Physical Sciences Platform with an active research program in Brain Imaging & Neurosciences.

Tier 1 Chairs are for outstanding established scholars. To meet the criteria for a Tier 1 CRC, nominees must: be outstanding and innovative world-class researchers whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their fields; be recognized internationally as leaders in their fields; have superior records of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (taking into account different practices in the relevant field or discipline) and, as chairholders, be expected to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers; and, be proposing an original, innovative research program of the highest quality.

Tier 2 Chair: Applicants must be a full-time Scientist in the Physical Sciences Platform with an active research program in Biomedical Ultrasound.

Tier 2 Chairs are for emerging scholars and the successful nominee should be within ten years of receiving their highest degree. To meet the criteria of the program, nominees must be excellent emerging world-class researchers who have demonstrated particular research creativity; have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years; as chairholders, have the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers; and be proposing an original, innovative research program of high quality.

Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.

How To Apply: Applications should specify the position to which they are applying (i.e. Tier 1 in Brain Imaging & Neurosciences; or Tier 2 in Biomedical Ultrasound). The application should include:

1) a letter of interest describing the applicant’s research program. The letter should briefly address the CRC review criteria and outline the candidate’s alignment with institutional strategic plans and include a list of the candidate’s five most significant publications.

2) full curriculum vitae including professional services, outreach, mentoring / training of highly qualified personnel and other contributions appropriate to the specific CRC vacancy, and

3) completed self-identification form (see note below*).

Selection Process and Criteria: The selection committee will be Chaired by Dr Kullervo Hynynen, Director of the Physical Sciences Platform, and will evaluate applicants based on the CV and cover letter submitted, and a summary table of research metrics derived largely from the CV and prepared by the strategic research programs office. For detailed information on the internal selection process and criteria, please consult SRI’s guidelines for the recruitment and nomination of internal CRCs.
