Current guidelines recommend using models that estimate the risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) to guide treatment decisions for preventive therapies like cholesterol-lowering statins. A new model developed by clinician-scientists provides a simplified approach that uses only laboratory tests, which may provide a significant advantage over traditional models.

Patients have lower healthcare costs with female surgeons, study finds
'Large cost savings' are found for female surgeons compared to male surgeons, but more research is needed to understand why these differences exist. A new study suggests that patients treated by female surgeons have lower total healthcare costs than patients treated by male surgeons, across many different types of procedures.
