M Wing Project “Tops Out”!

June 23, 2008

The construction crew working on Sunnybrook’s M Wing vertical shell expansion project celebrated a crucial project milestone last week: the “Topping Out.” Topping out means crews have reached the top of the structure and the end of major concrete activities.

After concrete was ceremonially poured from a gleaming bucket attached to the western tower crane, approximately 130 crew members gathered for a delicious barbecue on the M6 level and some words of thanks from Sunnybrook’s President and CEO, Barry McLellan, and from Vanbots Construction.

Sunnybrook’s M Wing vertical shell expansion will be a significant change to the landscape of the hospital. The project will create four additional floors on top of M Wing at Sunnybrook Campus. Two of the four floors added to M Wing will be the future home of the Perinatal & Gynaecology (P&G) pogram, including a state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and expanded capacity for Labour and Delivery.

The M Wing project is expected to be complete in mid-2010 with the P&G fit-out consuming the last year of construction
