Colorectal Cancer: Reduce Your Risk: Get Screened

  • Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Canada.
  • Incidence of colorectal cancer in Ontario is one of the highest globally.
  • Screening means doing the test when you have no problems (or symptoms) with your bowels.
  • In 2003, less than 20 per cent of men and women in Ontario were getting screened for colorectal cancer.
  • In 2007, funding for the first in Canada and in North America, provincial colorectal cancer screening program was announced in Ontario. The public launch of the program called ColonCancerCheck was in March 2008. Most other provinces are developing and implementing province-wide screening programs with the goal of improving colorectal cancer screening rates and saving lives.
