Bypass surgery patient completes half marathon

September 28, 2010

In March 2009, Emil Boychuk had minimally invasive bypass surgery at Sunnybrook.

The Schulich Heart Centre was the first centre in Toronto to offer this less-invasive alternative to tradition bypass surgery. One and a half years later, Emil has recovered extremely well and on Sunday, September 26 – World Heart Day – the 63-year-old runner successfully completed the half-marathon at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

"I am deeply grateful for being given this option." says Emil.

"Besides not having a large chest wound to heal, my body and heart seemed to be restored to a healthy state quickly. Also, I have no visible scars. Soon after surgery I was able to get up and about and soon fulfill my daily walking prescription with ease and minimal discomfort."

"Today, was a beautiful day," he adds. "It was a perfect day for running and I was totally elated as I crossed the finish line."
