Health Expo honours the late Dr. William Sibbald

October 6, 2010

A Sunnybrook trailblazer, the late Dr. William Sibbald is being honoured at this year's Celebrating Innovations in Health Care Expo 2010.

Presented by HealthAchieve in partnership with the Government of Ontario, the Expo showcases initiatives driving health care system renewal in Ontario. The Expo takes place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on November 10, 2010, and we enthusiastically invite you to attend.

The William Sibbald Award for Excellence in Patient Safety will be presented as part of this year's Minister's Awards Ceremony for the outstanding innovation in the theme of Improving Safety.

The late Dr. Sibbald (who was one of the Expo's founding selection committee members) was Physician-in-Chief of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Critical Care. He was a pioneer in critical care medicine and a champion of improvements in patient safety system-wide.

A stand-alone award for patient safety initiatives was presented by the MOHLTC in Dr. Sibbald's honour in 2008 and 2009.

This is the first year that the Sibbald Award is being presented as part of Celebrating Innovations in Health Care Expo, in keeping with his contribution to this important event. Including the Sibbald Award in the fifth annual Expo event highlights a shared commitment to innovation and excellence.

About the EXPO:

The Expo reflects six new themes that focus on the government's Excellent Care for All strategy to create a high quality, integrated health care system with better patient outcomes and improved access to care:

  • Improving Integration
  • Improving Patient/Resident Centredness
  • Improving Evidence-based Practice
  • Improving Access
  • Improving Safety
  • Improving Efficiency

In addition to the five awards to be presented at Expo 2010, a People's Choice Award will also be presented.

The seven award winners will each receive an achievement grant of $10,000 to continue to promote knowledge transfer of their innovations after the close of Expo 2010.
