Health tip: Help prevent elderly falls

October 27, 2010

Falls are no joke for the elderly. One in three seniors will suffer a fall this year resulting in serious injury, hospitalization and even death.

Risk factors for falls

  • Problems with balance
  • Feeling unsteady when walking
  • Impaired vision
  • Impaired cognition or depression
  • Personal hazards (inappropriate footwear or clothing)
  • Environmental hazards (loose rugs, uneven sidewalks)
  • Taking multiple medications
  • Previous history of falls
  • Alcohol consumption

Many falls are preventable. Here are some quick tips:

  • Keep your environment clear and well lit
  • Keep frequently used items (cane/walker/wheelchair) close at hand. For hard to reach items use a reaching stick
  • Use assistive devices such as a raised toilet seat, bath seat and transfer pole
  • Remove loose and worn rugs/area carpets, stray electrical cords
  • Install non-skid tub mats in the bathtub
  • Orient yourself to any special equipment such as grab bars and light switches
  • Know the layout of your room and common areas
  • Apply brakes on walker or wheelchair before standing up
  • Hip guards are an excellent aid and an ounce of prevention
  • Wear supportive shoes that fit well with a low heel and rubber soles. Shoes with Velcro are easier to put on
  • Exercise! This will help improve strength, balance and mobility
  • Fear of falling can lead many seniors to withdraw from activities
