New Program Research Director, Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Clement Hamani as the new director of the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Research Program, effective February 1, 2022.

Dr. Hamani is currently a senior scientist at Sunnybrook Research Institute and professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He completed his medical training and neurosurgery residency in Brazil, followed by a fellowship in functional neurosurgery at Toronto Western Hospital. He also holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the Federal University of São Paulo in Brazil. Dr. Hamani was a scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) before joining Sunnybrook in 2017 as head of preclinical research at the Harquail Centre for Neuromodulation.

Dr. Hamani’s research is focused on developing new ways of modulating the function of nervous tissue and discovering new applications for techniques that stimulate the brain and spinal cord to treat neurological and psychiatric disorders. His work ranges from basic research in preclinical models to clinical trials.

In addition to congratulating Dr. Hamani on his new appointment, we'd also like to thank Dr. Sandra Black for her tremendous leadership in advancing the Brain Sciences Research Program for more than 15 years. She will continue her work as an active researcher and neurologist at Sunnybrook, in addition to her other leadership roles.
