Dr. Stephen Choi awarded Alzheimer’s Association Research Grant

Congratulations to Dr. Stephen Choi, director of research in the Department of Anesthesia at Sunnybrook, who was recently awarded an Alzheimer’s Association Research Grant for his work leading the CODEX trial. This large multicentre trial, currently recruiting in six sites across Canada, is investigating the efficacy of dexmedetomidine sedation in improving cognitive outcomes after cardiac surgery in older patients. As part of Dr. Choi’s overarching research program to improve perioperative brain health, CODEX has the potential to definitively establish dexmedetomidine as a pharmacological strategy to reduce the incidence of postoperative neurocognitive disorders. The Alzheimer’s Association Research Grant was awarded to Dr. Choi in recognition of this promising trial, and underscores the importance of his research program.
