Congratulations to Dr. Stephen Choi

November 29, 2021

We are pleased to announce that the project entitled “Redesigning the surgical pathway: optimizing PReOperative assessMent in anesthesia clinic for adulT surgical patiEnts (PROMoTE)” led by Dr. Stephen Choi was funded by the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) and was designated as the APSF and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) President Award.

Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is a significant health issue with far-reaching socioeconomic implications, which can affect anyone undergoing anesthesia and surgery. Despite this, PND remains frequently unrecognized and misdiagnosed, and there are currently no pharmacological treatments available. The PROMoTE trial addresses the absence of objective cognitive screening required to identify at-risk individuals and implements a non-pharmacological education-based strategy to reduce delirium and PND. The project will improve perioperative cognitive safety, facilitate delirium prevention, reduce associated complications, healthcare costs and mortality. This innovative project has a direct path to implementation into patients care settings.
