Dr. Martin Yaffe named into The Royal Society of Canada

Dr. Martin Yaffe, a senior scientist in Physical Sciences and the Odette Cancer Research Program at Sunnybrook Research Institute, has been named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He joins 88 other new Fellows that were appointed the top honour, which recognizes scholars who have made remarkable contributions in the arts, the humanities and the sciences, as well as in Canadian public life. He will be formally inducted to the RSC during the awards ceremony in November in Montreal.

Dr. Yaffe, who is also a professor in the Departments of Medical Biophysics and Medical Imaging at the University of Toronto, is a physicist specializing in imaging research applied to earlier diagnosis of breast cancer. He is interested in imaging techniques for the detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, as well as methods for analyzing image patterns to predict breast cancer risk and to help develop preventive measures. He is recognized for the development of digital mammography, now used clinically worldwide and for his research on breast density as a risk factor for cancer and an impediment to its accurate detection. He is now applying medical imaging principles to improve quantitative biomarker analysis in pathology.

Dr. Yaffe is Co-Director of the Imaging Research Program at The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research. He holds the Tory Family Chair in Cancer Research at Sunnybrook and has received numerous accolades for his scientific excellence, including being appointed to the Order of Canada in 2015.
