Research Summary:

Dr. Callum's research focus is the improvement of transfusion practice within the hospital setting. Her goal is to improve the appropriateness of transfusion practice, reduce wastage and improve transfusion safety to minimize adverse effects.

Her current research projects at Sunnybrook include the following:

  • implementation of positive patient identification (mobile handheld computers) for transfusion to reduce the risk of acute haemolytic transfusion reactions;
  • implementation of a Province wide education program for transfusion medicine, including a web-based educational program and transfusion handbook (Bloody Easy 2);
  • implementation of remote allocation of red blood cells in 3 operating rooms in Ontario to improve safety and reduce blood product wastage; and
  • development and implementation of a National Transfusion Error Tracking System for Canada.
