Gynecologic Pathology
Who We Are
The Gynecologic Pathology team at Sunnybrook is composed of six highly trained and specialized gynecological pathologists with extensive cumulative experience in teaching, translational research, publication and consultative service. It constitutes the largest and most active gynecologic pathology team on a single site in Canada.
What We Do
Our department receives more than 10,000 gynecologic pathology surgical specimens annually, more than 7,000 of which are neoplastic, as well as more than 23,000 liquid-based gynecological cytology specimens, more than 7,000 of which come from colposcopy clinics.
Most of the oncologic cases are referred with exceptionally complex and unusual scenarios to our world-renowned gynecologic oncologists and radiation oncologists at the Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre, the sixth largest and busiest cancer center in the world.
Some of the extraordinary surgical procedures, which are performed almost on a biweekly or monthly basis in our hospital include radical trachelectomy, pelvic exenteration, and sentinel lymph node excision for cervical and vulvar malignancies. Different types of vulvectomy specimens are also routinely performed.
How We Can Help
The Gynecologic Pathology team is uniquely situated to actively participate along with the gynecologic oncologists and radiation oncologists at the Odette Cancer Centre weekly tumor boards (multidisciplinary cancer conferences), which constitutes an exceptional platform for multidisciplinary learning and discussion and a unique opportunity to build state-of-the-art expert case management skills.
