Sunnybrook uses the least invasive means to treat those with heart and blood vessel issues, resulting in shorter hospital stays, less pain and an earlier return to normal activities. Many treatments we are using are so new they are not yet covered by government funding.
For example, our MitraClip program for patients with severe symptoms from leaking heart valves is entirely funded by donors. The procedure involves threading the MitraClip device through a vein in the upper thigh to the heart. It takes half as long as open-heart surgery and patients are ready to go home in about 48 hours.
Patients with severe arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) are also benefiting from Sunnybrook's groundbreaking treatments. We were the first hospital in Canada to pioneer a state-of-the-art robotic surgery system to restore regular heartbeat. This technique has proven to be safer and more effective than traditional techniques.
