Rapid Results Biopsy Clinic

What we do

We are the first centre in Canada to provide a rapid results biopsy clinic.

Men who require a transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy to determine the presence of prostate cancer will be able to get their results within 72 hours* compared to the standard two to three weeks. This lets men know sooner and helps those who are diagnosed to quickly start treatment options.

What can I expect?

When you first arrive at the clinic, your oncologist will assess your risk for prostate cancer and whether a biopsy is needed. The oncologists in the clinic use the Sunnybrook Prostate Cancer Risk Calculator, a checklist that better determines within minutes individual risk and especially risk for aggressive disease even among men with low or normal PSA (prostate specific antigen). The tool is based on all known risk factors beyond the PSA test alone, and ‘saves' men from unnecessary biopsies and identifies those who may need biopsies due to missed indications from the PSA test.

If a need for biopsy is determined, you will be seen within 72 hours at the Odette Cancer Centre's Genitourinary Cancer Care clinic. The multidisciplinary team including urologic surgical and radiation oncologists will review your biopsy results.

If prostate cancer is identified, you will receive immediate, supportive and comprehensive counseling on the treatments available including surgery, radiation or active surveillance — areas in which Sunnybrook has leading international experts. If biopsy results are negative, you will avoid enduring two to three weeks of uncertainty.

How can I get an appointment at the clinic?

You can be referred to the clinic by your family physician or you can contact the clinic directly.

*The majority of men will be able to receive their results within 72 hours. A small proportion of men may require a further 48 hours of special testing from their biopsy specimens to obtain final results.
