Who can be a Patient Partner?

At Sunnybrook, we value our patient partners and their contribution to health research.

Patient Partner:

A patient partner may be a patient, family member (includes chosen family), essential care partner (caregiver) or community member. They provide insight, perspectives, and share valuable information about their experience with a condition or illness and/or their experience with the organization/hospital and the wider health-care system.

Benefits of becoming a Patient Partner:

There are a large variety of experiences and skills that can be gained from participating in research projects as a patient partner that is unique to each individual. Some of the benefits of becoming a patient partner include:

  • Sharing valuable information about your experience so that others can learn from you.
  • Working with physicians, researchers, and other health-care staff while making a positive difference.
  • Increasing your social network by meeting other people with similar experiences.
  • Learning more about health, medicine, the research process and the health system.
  • Contributing to improving the health-care system for yourself and others.
  • Gaining confidence and feeling empowered by becoming an advocate.
  • Opportunity to use your own skills and bring them to the team and work with others.

At Sunnybrook we welcome everyone who is willing to discuss their experience and share their knowledge, listens well and enjoys working with others, and is able to attend meetings and planning sessions to participate in research as a patient partner.
