Active surveillance program

For some men diagnosed with low risk prostate cancer, we offer management strategies through active surveillance.

This evidence-based approach aims to improve quality of life by reducing radical treatment which can result in side effects to include erectile dysfunction, and problems with urinary control.

Patients are carefully monitored on an ongoing basis; Those who are re-classified as ‘higher risk' over time, based on rapid rise in PSA or grade progression on repeat biopsy, are offered intervention through surgery, radiation or chemotherapy.

Generally, men in this clinic are ages 60 years or less, have been diagnosed with low risk prostate cancer, and have a low to intermediate PSA range and a small volume of cancer as detected through biopsy.
