Second season of ‘Injury is Not Equal’ podcast focuses on Traumatic Brain Injury

July 28, 2023

Season Two of the Sunnybrook Centre for Injury Prevention podcast called ‘Injury is Not Equal’ is nearing its final episode.

The Injury is Not Equal podcast explores the relationship between identity factors, systemic structures and health outcomes. We know that race, ethnicity, economic status, gender identity, age and sex are deeply intertwined in health outcomes, and the podcast aims to take a closer look at this issue.

This second season highlights Traumatic Brain Injury, often referred to as “TBI” for short. Traumatic Brain Injury can occur from any form of blow, bump or jolt to the head or body and ranges greatly in severity. The leading causes of TBI are from falls and motor vehicle collisions. If not fatal, TBI can have serious long-term effects. TBI experiences are not equal. The podcast discusses the many factors that disproportionately affect risk and outcome of traumatic brain injury. TBI is one of the leading causes of disability globally and it accounts for 2% of the population in Canada. Each year, approximately 165,000 individuals in Canada are affected by TBI. By 2031, it is expected that TBI will be among the most common neurological conditions to affect Canadians (Brain Injury Canada, 2022.)

Episodes from the second season cover a wide range of topics related to TBI, including:

Episode #1: TBI & Socioeconomics

Episode #2: TBI & Specialized Services

Episode 3 & 4: TBI & Intimate Partner Violence

Episode #5: TBI & Mental Health

Episode #6: TBI & the Justice System

Episode #7: TBI & Seniors (To be released August 1st)

Guests are interviewed by host, Shaelyn Fitzpatrick, a Registered Nurse and the Injury Prevention Educator from the Centre for Injury Prevention, which is situated within the Tory Trauma Program at Sunnybrook.
